BNS Wax Recommendations

Minimize
As racers, coaches and service technicians, we've worked at every level of the sport from local high school races to Olympics and World Championships.  When we launched BNS, one of the first things we did was start publishing wax reports that included multiple brands.  We figured that the while typical wax reports from each company were useful, most racers want to know what wax is fastest - period - not just what is running best from each brand.

These wax reports are our best effort at providing objective, useful information for racers. We import several wax brands including Holmenkol, SkiGo, Guru, Magnar and Gallium, and we sell Swix, Toko, Rex, Rode and Start, among others. We try our best to test as many waxes as possible, but it is just not possible to test everything, and no test is infallible.  With this in mind, we seek full transparency in every one of our recommendations by discussing how we test, what the results are and what we recommend, so you can trust our work and decide for yourself how valuable our recommendations are.  We hope that these reports will be useful to you and help you make fast skis!

New Snow expected but temperatures stable.
Happy Thanksgiving! BNS Mobile tested waxes today and has recommendations for Friday's 10/15km skate race.

West Yellowstone Ski Festival

10/15km Skating Races 11/24/2011

The course is 2-3 laps of a 5km loop.  The snow on Thursday morning was highly variable with transformed, glazing snow in areas with sun and newer, dryer snow in protected areas.  Forecast new snow will change things, but temps seem stable compared to the weather over the past few days.

Weather

From NOAA:

Link to the latest weather from NOAA: http://tinyurl.com/km8mg2

Thanksgiving Day: Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Southwest wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thursday Night: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. Southwest wind between 10 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Friday: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 29. West southwest wind between 15 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Recommendation

We recommend the following:

Base Layer: Ski*Go LF Graphite, Iron and  brush

Race Paraffin:  Swix HF8 or Swix HF7

Fluoro Powder: Ski*Go C105, Ski*Go CM-10

Top Coat: TBD race morning.  BNS will be testing at the stadium and posting results.

Structure: medium structure, dulled (older) grinds seemed to be running faster than sharper, newer grinds.

CONCLUSIONARY NOTES – BNS will have a table set up and will be testing top coats, hand structure, and kick wax at the race venue. Come by to get our latest test results and recommendations.

Testing -

We tested HF paraffin waxes and pure fluoro powders at 10AM on the 5km race loop Thursday. It was too windy to test in the speed trap, so tests were run by feel.

Ski*Go CM-10 powder was clearly fastest today, but given that it runs best in older snow, we went with Ski*Go C105 as a reliable choice for new snow.  C105 has been running well in the past few days and will run much colder if the weather turns colder than expected.

Test Results

Testing by Feel:

Paraffins: tested by feel at 10:30AM

  1. Swix HF8
  2. Holmenkol Speedbase Wet
  3. SkiGo HF Blue

Tested but not ranked:

  • Holmenkol Matrix Blue
  • Holmenkol Matrix Red
  • SkiGo HF Orange/Green 50/50
  • SkiGo Orange

Fluoro Powders:  tested by feel

  1. Ski*Go CM-10
  2. Ski*Go C105
  3. Swix FC8x
  4. Holmenkol Mid 08
  5. Holmenkol Cold
  6. Holmenkol Mid
  7. Holmenkol Wet 36
  8. Ski*Go C22

note: BNS imports Holmenkol and SkiGo waxes, and also sells waxes from Swix, Toko, Rode, Solda, Rex, Guru, Innovax, Magnar and others. We search for the fastest waxes for our customers and our testing is professional, objective and transparent. We make our best effort to test what we think is the best from each brand.  However, given that we are testing more options from Holmenkol and SkiGo, there is a bias toward those brands.  With this full disclosure, you can assess the legitimacy of our testing yourself. Visit Swix and Toko for their official recommendations. If you have any questions please contact us.
