We will not be running a grind batch the week of March 1, 2009 due to Nathan being at World Championships and Peter going over for the Engadin.  The current batch of skis will be completed by 2/28.  The next batch after that will be run March 10th & 11th.  We will continue to run the hot box regularly during this time.

Want to have World Cup Service on your skis for the big race?  No problem, just bring them in and we'll get them ready to go.  Lower your stress level and get a pro to do your skis.  $19 for Low-fluoro, $39 for High-Fluoro (LF & HF Layers) and $59 for pure fluoro (LF, HF + Pure Fluoro).  If your skis have been neglected, we also offer a special race ready hot box service where the skis get saturated in the hot box and then put back in with the final HF race wax layer for $49.

Image: Managing an elite fleet of skis by Kevin Hochtl
At the end of the 2007-2008 season I sat down with my coach and evaluated areas in which I needed to improve. One of the key needs we identified was ski selection and grinds and we started working with Boulder Nordic Sport (BNS) to gain the expertise of Nathan Schultz and Peter Abraham to help me pick and manage my fleet of skis.

Image: Hairies, Zeroes, Multis & Micro Skis. Huh?

One of the major focuses of the US Ski Team's Whistler Ski Service Development Project that I've been working on is finding a way to make classic skis work in a place where conditions are nightmarishly difficult more often than not. I can't go into great detail because we're pretty secretive about our findings, at least until after the games in 2010.  But I'm not spilling any great secrets to acknowledge that hairies are an important tool at the Callaghan Valley Olympic Venue.  My trip to the Fischer factory in Austria in June and my meetings with the race department people there made it abundantly clear that the world is aware they will need to have their hairies skis ready to go.   Read More...

Airline travel with a quiver full of skis has never been easy, but tightened baggage regulations and enforcement have dramatically changed things and made shipping skis ahead of time much more attractive.  Expect to pay significant airline fees for even lightweight bags and hefty fees for bags stuffed with multiple pairs.    Read More...

The BNS Stone Grinding Crew of Tom, Peter, Chris and Nathan just returned from the West Yellowstone Ski Festival where we spent the week grinding 175 pairs of skis, testing structures and working with athletes and teams.  We also launched the Finite Finish Structure Tool there and it received a lot of interest from coaches and teams.   Read More...

Image: Using Hand Structure to Optimize Skis By Zach Caldwell
At the World Cup Level, Hand Structure modifications are a standard step in optimizing ski performance.  While structure is not added in every case, it's added more often than you might think, and it's tested for every race.  Even in cold conditions, structure modifications are a regular occurence.  We often get questions from grind customers asking whether it is OK to use hand structure tools.  The answer is, "of course!"
